A reader who is single and not looking to become unsingle asked me a simple question that, to me, does not seem to have a simple answer: Where can he go for social support?

The reader is a gay man living in the Bay Area, so suggestions specific to him are most welcome. I’d also like to broaden the question. If you are a single person of any sexual orientation living anywhere at all and you want to live your single life rather than seek to escape it, how can you find other people who will be supportive of your wishes and values? Is there a way to find like-minded friends, or at least people who appreciate your goals even if they do not share them personally? What about professionals? Is there a way to know in advance whether a therapist or other professional is likely to accept the possibility that some people enjoy their single lives?

Thanks for any suggestions you may have.
